Matthew Herbert

At C3 Matthew Herbert will present his current album, 'The End of Silence'. The album is composed from a ten-second audio recording made by the war photographer Sebastian Meyer during the battle of Ras Lanuf in Libya on 11 March 2011. Working with this sample as the sole source for the record, Herbert wanted “to freeze history, press pause, wander around inside the sound – trying to understand its component parts, wondering why it was so scary.” For 'The End of Silence' the ten-second recording was fragmented and atomised into a range of samples.

Matthew Herbert uses the methods and techniques of contemporary music as well as those of conceptual art, instilling them with a twist of club and DJ culture. At the same time, his pieces always have a highly political edge.
